That's because wallets aren't for coins!!! That's what the little change pocket in dude pants is for. Then when you get home you chuck them onto a table, or dresser or into a jar until they build up en masse and have to be taken to the bank...!

Fun fact! That little pocket started out as a spot for pocket watches when everybody carried one.

I still carry a few just because I know I'd lose them if I didn't, and they can be handy at times for vending machines and I've always got a pound coin saved to release the shopping trolley at the supermarket every week.

Adrian, this is such an interesting thread!

Now, all my friends are pressuring me to abandon the almost-square male wallet and go to a longer female version.  But I am resisting, and it's purely because almost every single handbag I have (that's a "purse" in American) has an internal pocket that I swear seems to have been designed for a male wallet.  Many of these pockets even have a zipper, so I can only assume it's for extra security. 

This leads me to an interesting question:  has this internal pocket been provided for us, or rather so that our menfolk can ask us to carry their wallets for them?

Yes you do get it back.  At least here in Canada you do.  It's just incentive to bring the cart back and put it away nicely.

I was using a hard type wallet for a while (those rectangle ones with awesome designs on it. Mine was Zelda)
But I was having major issues pulling it from my pockets so I went ahead and grabbed a men's Zelda wallet and actually it's been great. Got 3 card spots which is all I really need anyways and shove the rest in the little back slip for like my grocery card, savers cards ect, stuff some cash in behind it all and my ID on the other side.
I was super worried I wouldn't have enough space either but being in the US coins are more of a hassle than a must so it works out fairly ok.

I use a male wallet, its nice, fits in my pocket.

Hey guys, just a bit of advice here-

If you keep a big fat wallet in your back pocket all the time, it forces you to sit crooked, which can lead to serious back problems over time.

I carry a card sleeve thing that has room for maybe like 8 cards. I don't use but maybe 4 of those spots. A fuel card that saves me 3 cents, behind that my ID, behind that my insurance cards, in the center my social and insurance cards.  I have no need to carry any more items. If I have cash, it just sits in my pocket with my wallet.

I didn't know it was a thing where people don't just put coins in their pockets? I always just throw my change in my pocket.

It really does depend on the area.  In the English countryside the thought of paying by card for anything short of maybe £20 was bizarre to me, the weekly shop would be brought in cash often, and then I moved away into towns and there was no minimum fee, no weird looks when putting a few pound on a card, almost no need to carry coins.  I still carry a few just because I know I'd lose them if I didn't, and they can be handy at times for vending machines and I've always got a pound coin saved to release the shopping trolley at the supermarket every week.

It's opposite for me, I moved into the countryside a few years ago and many places still don't accept card payments, when they do there's usually a £5 minimum and a 50p charge to use a card. It drives me crazy. I get cashback when I use my credit card durnit!

I don't like coins in my pockets for many reasons. It's harder to get it out when you need to buy things. If you put it in the same pocket as a phone it can scratch it. Hole in the pocket...bye bye money. Sitting down can also cause a coin escape. Plus you get those annoying moments where you grab clothes and end up dumping coins all over the floor

I don't do coins in my pockets because I've got enough loose things floating around as it is.  The tokens we can use to pay for lunch and dinner on base, filters, rizlas, keys, etc.  Then there's no way it's sharing a pocket with my phone.  They fall all over the floor and just get lost that way.

Yup, you get it back.  They're all linked together, and when you put a pound in it pushes out the link to the next trolley so you can take it away.  People used to just leave them anywhere in the car park, or steal them all the time and they'd be in rivers, gardens, skips, where ever.  Not all supermarkets do it, but the majority of them do these days, and have magnetic brakes on the wheels so they can't leave the property of the supermarket.

Maybe I worded badly, I meant that the countryside doesn't accept cards in a lot of places, or you've got to spend a fiver or so.  That said in Brighton I got charged to use my card to buy two icecreams.  I see their point, as it tends to cost them 0.8%, but debit cards are just 8p per transaction, but it was irritating.  I'd grown up there though, so it was normal to me.

I've always carried a guy's wallet (and gotten a bizarre amount of flack for it from an otherwise very liberal crowd. Who knew that wallets were the trigger to send people back to the 50s, gender roles style?), and I've never had too much trouble fitting all my cards, etc, in there. EXCEPT for the fact that the leather slot things inevitably fall apart in just a few months. I know it's because I overstuff 'em*, so I guess my recommendation is to grab something cheap, shove all your crap in there, and then shrug and toss it 6mo later.

* I've got 20 plastic cards and 5 stamp cards in my wallet. Hey, if it fits in my ass pocket, who cares, right?

I've been using a male wallet for a long time. I never carry that many cards and if I get coins I do what someone else mentioned. I throw them in a jar when I get home. I noticed a couple days ago, before this thread started my jar is almost full.

And sometimes, when I am going out for a long walk with the dog, I just pull out my driver's license and bank card. That's often when I think there's a chance I will end up in the water. My dog and I do some crazy things. Also if I'm going for a long walk it's just easier to travel light. One pocket for dog bribery, one for poop bags, one for the phone and it's nice to not have to cram the wallet in another pocket. I do tend to keep my wallet in my back pocket but there's not that much in it.  I also like cargo pants so then I have lots of pockets and can carry all kinds of crap.

I actually am thinking I might want to try a cell-phone wallet. Since I've started carrying my phone all the time now. Then it's one thing to carry and keep track of.

I have three pocket items: a streamlined bifold wallet for cards, a very slim front pocket wallet for bills, and a key case with a change compartment. This system has worked for years.

Julia, I think that must be the reason for the pocket! When I tried doing purses, I always ended up carrying my hub's stuff [emoji16] Now, when we go out, he's always disappointed I don't carry a purse lol

You don't have to change to the "female" wallet. As I said, I personally refuse to gender accessories - but maybe you could find something in a nice color? I personally find the standard male 100 shades of black, gray, and brown fairly boring [emoji2]

OT: having grown up with the "use a token or coin to get a cart" thing, it was so weird to me that in the US you just got to take one. Crazy! But then I never understood why 50ct would keep anyone from doing mischief with the cart if they wanted to [emoji12]

In Germany, the credit/debit card limit tends to be 10-15€. It's slowly crumbling, but there are still a lot of places that don't take cards at all.

I know, I actually meant opposite in that....you moved away from the country and I moved to it. So after being used to being able to throw everything on my card it was weird to adjust to needing cash all the time. So I think it was me who worded it badly

I gotta echo with the "coins destroy wallets" part. It's true, I've lost two wallets to coins and a third one is one the way. 8I But in Europe, there's a need for coins. No one euro bills or anything.

But I can't understand how one can stuff their wallet in the back pocket of their pants and be comfortable. Mine is thick, even when I don't have any coins and I have emptied it from receipts and such, I just have so many cards to carry with me. :'D

The thought of a very full wallet, reminds me of the time I was playing poker at a casino, and a new player at the table pulled out his wallet to buy chips, anyway his wallet was so jam packed with everything imaginable, that it couldn't be closed; it was massive. So, I couldn't help from asking him "Is that a wallet, or a briefcase?" He chuckled, and everyone at the table laughed as well.
