Being moved to a different NHS board region, for the purposes of sperm freezing, and dealing with a lovely respectful young man who said it was simply a matter of a referral letter from a GP, that can be acted on as soon as they get it, and that I have the legal right to completely free storage, as does anyone transitioning.
Not the story I got from the harridan of a fertility receptionist at my local board, who when I explained said "oh that takes months and months". When I said it can't possibly take such a long time when it has to be a fast service used to going at speed, for people starting chemotherapy, she said "yeah, well it's hardly that in this case is it?".
No, love, just another few months of dysphoria - why don't you try it! Then she went on about the potential counseling that would be required - and involve more time and an extra waiting list. I said what exactly is the counseling for? She laughed and said "the implications" like I was some kind of child. I said "I'd have thought the implications were obvious". So she concluded "maybe you just can't do it then".
I'm going to ring back and report her.
