My sister used to listen to Dave Brubeck's album with Take Five on it during every long car trip she took, but one day she got in a bad accident while it was on and she hasn't listened to it since.

aw. hope she was alright.

once i was eating fig newtons while driving, and almost crashed my car.

later, i got rid of the car and was riding a motorcycle, while trying to stuff a fig newton in my face, and went off the road.

since then, i only enjoy fig newtons in the safety of my apartment.

Phillip Glass is what I put on when I want to end the party, without telling people to leave.  That or Bela Bartok, Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste.

Ha, you won't get rid of me that easily.  I love Glass's work, especially Koyanisqatsi and a recording of him playing solo piano, however I like Steve Reich and Terry Riley even more. And La Monte Young. And anything by Bartok. I might be the only one left at said party  ;D

Not on Ell's Picks there aren't!

i go more for beautiful/melodic, or fun/punk, Celtic, or terrific groove. i stay away from most Techno/Rave/Dance, old school Classical, Hip Hop, most Jazz, old school Funk, hardcore Metal, New Wave, speed Metal, hardcore Rap (but i love Fergie's brand of rap). i don't know how to classify bands like M83 or Boards of Canada, but i like them alot.

i thought Captain Beefheart's cover of Frank Zappa's "Debra Kadabra" was pretty good, but it's not the kind of thing i can listen to over and over, which is a requirement i set for myself on this thread.

-Ell

ps.
if you like Beefheart, you should try and talk Pica Pica into starting a Pica picks thread. i think hir's crazy about him.

Melodic punk?  Your kidding right?

What ever happened to that PUNK REBEL deal
(except for the fact that they write the same damn A/B/A - verse/chorus/verse songs that everyone else before them wrote.  Except for Flipper and Pop-O-Pies.  That stuff was good.

i didn't say melodic punk. i said fun/punk. as in songs such as "Jan Brady" by the Lunachicks. i know that this is not a recognized genre. but i mention it because of songs like "Jan Brady", and "Something Else", by Sid Vicious. they're punk, but they're not terribly offensive. and they're lots of fun, imo.

the melodic/beautiful songs (again, i know this is not a recognized genre) would include stuff like "Caribbean Blue" by Enya, or just about anything by Sigur Rós.

since i'm not a music critic, i don't really care about genre names so much. if i think a song is good, and i like it, what does it matter what genre it belongs to?

Sigur Ros I'll give you, Enya is just pro-tool crap, so you can have that.

Sid Vicious - all promo, no playing.  Sid Barrett is another matter.

He does, but don't we all?  And about Frank Zappa.  Most of the people on all the pages of vids preceding this are not fit to even carry his used guitar strings, much less, ever play with him.

Ell,

Thanks for posting the Captain Beefheart song! Very cool!

The guitar riff that the song is built on was used by Muddy Waters for Rolling and Tumbling. Robert Johnson used the same riff for both If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day and Traveling Riverside Blues. I believe the earliest recording of this melody was Minglewood Blues, recorded in 1928 by Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers. I'm sure this was more than any really wanted to know... I'll go back under my rock now...  ;D

Frank Zappa is a bit irritating to my ears.

If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day

Is flat out one of the best songs ever written, and one of the ten commandments of Blues/Rock for sure.

As for Frank Zappa.  I can write you a check to  guarantee that 100 years from now, about the only person in Rock music they will talk about in serrious music schools is Frank Zappa.  Really, he put out close to 90 records (as opposed to the two or three that most bands labor mightly to produce) and still has over 20,000 hours of music in the vault.  I really only like about 20% of Frank's stuff.  But that 20% is more music than the entire Pink Floyd catalog.  That's a fact.

Kate Bush was very good too.  She is missed, and loved.

Ell, i don't recall you ever claiming to be either... but if I have to choose between them, heathen sounds like more fun  ;)
