From what I've read, there's no evidence at all that Edvard was "disgusted", he just didn't feel the same way - in fact, he wrote in his memoir "I found myself unable to respond to this love, and this caused the author much suffering."

There was an X-men storyline in an alternative universe where several members had their sexes permanently altered. Took them a whileto get used to it, since it wasnt reverseble.

Virginia Woolf's 1927 Book "Orlando", and the 1992 movie version.

Orlando starts off as an androgynous male.  Midway through the book he falls into a coma-like state and emerges as a woman.

Orlando: "Same person. No difference at all... just a different sex."

Team Rocket Pokemon Jessi and James were total gender benders! XD

Mello in Death Note is gorgeous and very androgynous in presentation.

There's a part in Soul Eater where they change sexes as well.

Declan.

Hange (a scientist) from Attack on Titan has no defined gender, but is usually referred to with female pronouns in the anime. The manga blurs the lines more.

Grell (a grim reaper) from Black Butler is transgender. Some fans mistakenly believe Grell is gay and crossdresses because she's in "guy mode" once in a while, but that's not the case.

Kuranosuke from Princess Jellyfish crossdresses (don't remember Kuranosuke's gender identity - I think male). I don't usually like this type of anime, but it's surprisingly funny.

Crona from Soul Eater also doesn't have a known gender, but some of the fans keep arguing about it.

I am not sure either since I can't find this paticular letter decribed in the picture which should be written around 1836(not 19th thats a spelling mistake) I posted the picture to make a long story short.

I would sure tell you if I find it but
it difficult to find the original letter because the general fact of him being queer is taboo and because they wrotte ALOT of letters, also many which was never sent.
reading other of his letters its diffently clear that He was very drawn to him and felt a deep love toward him while edvard seams to have felt more of a regular friendship felling. edvard was also marrige and had kids, in some way you could say edvard always keep his distance and turned andersen down. Andersens letter where alot longer and very deep with emotions and he used many powerfull ways to end his letter like:
"your always by hearted andersen" or "your andersen" where edward letters where shorter and not that overly emotional usunally with a "your honest friend edward" or "your loyal friend"

and he once asked to use the prononce of "you" while speaking, but edvard refused that which anderson never forgot. Back then saying "you" to others was a very big thing. you only did that with someone you was really close to.

D'eon De Beaumont feom Chevalier D'eon. His sister was murdered then merged with her brother's soul. Gorgeous anime and based on real people from the 1700's. I highly recommend it.

the manga/anime Hourou Musuko (wandering son) is about 2 transgender children. I cried a lot watching the anime because scenes really hit close to home and reminded me of events in my childhood.

Ah, someone else here has seen it. I'm still trying to finish the manga (Might take a long time) but the anime, well, that ending *SPOILER ALERT* I was NOT pleased with how they made it seem like the MC just accepted their fate and as if it didn't bother them in the end. I didn't like how the anime portrayed trans people when you compare it to the real world. In the manga, that wasn't the case and while I forget what was said by said MC in the anime, I DO KNOW she never said it in the manga, which is what gets to me.. *End spoiler alert* Other wise, it was real good, done well and, I really enjoyed/liked it. I was seriously worried it'd make me depressed, cry and so on but none of that happened for me and it was really light hearted. :)

There is a transwoman called Chaplin Sukegawara in the manga Deadman Wonderland and she is one of the major side characters of the story.

http://deadmanwonderland.wikia.com/wiki/Chaplin_Sukegawa

I was actually quite impressed with the way she was handled as I thought she overall actually fit and was quite authentic in terms of general trans(woman) experience.

Then I of course think of Laurence Anyways and The Skin I Live In that both explicitly choose to explore the trans experience in their respective ways, but I am not sure if those are the kinds of characters and stories the OP is specifically looking for. Otherwise MtF genderbending isn't that uncommon.

Then there's Ranma ½ that's a famous shonen anime/manga whose main character changes between male and female personas. I also think of Poison from the Street Fighter franchise who is also an interesting character in that she's infamous due to her trans status within gaming  circles. Not sure I'd really count Birdie from the Super Mario 2 game in there.
Come watch with me as our world burns.

Mantra from Malibu Comics came out around 1993-94, which were major years for my dysphoria/denial/depression. One to look up to in those days, that's for sure!

"The warrior-mage Lukasz was reincarnated as a woman, much to his chagrin. He learns to accept his new fate over time, and continues to fight ancient evil."

Lord Fanny from the Invisibles comics (I have the whole series but have yet to read it) is trans as well...

"There was a sculptor, and he found this stone, a special stone. He dragged it home and he worked on it for months, until he finally finished. When he was ready he showed it to his friends and they said he had created a great statue. And the sculptor said he hadn't created anything, the statue was always there, he just cleared away the small peices." Rambo III

I love the anime, manga and Marvel stuff, but as a vintage comic buff I can say for certain that gender bending got quite a start in the Silver Age with DC comics, believe it or not. Superman's buddy Jimmy Olsen was apparently an adept crossdresser, often finding excuses to "disguise" himself as a girl-- always with very convincing results.

In one classic Superboy changed temporarily into a cute Supergirl and in the '70s Superman occasionally turned up a superwoman. What got me was the costume always changed into a perfectly styled feminine version, too.
