Hey!
There seem to be a few Aussie girls on this forum... I'm one and if you are too why not add your name to this thread. You don't have to indicate where in this great big overbaked continent you are, but if you do feel comfortable with adding your state/territory, region/city that would be cool. :)
I'm in Sydney, NSW...

Hi MsGrace;
I am living in Victoria, south of Melbourne. I am here generally in the Summer & Autumn months and then in the United Kingdom for the northern hemisphere summer.
Watching the water going down the sink gets a bit confusing, so are the jibes from friends in the UK that tell me I sound like an Australian and friends in Oz that tell me I sound like a Pom!

I'm assuming that this is Australian slang for the British? What's the common slang term for Canadians? Also,
and pardon if this is an embarrassing question to ask, how do Australian generally perceive the Canadian accent and dialect? Always curious.

Yeah, don't know where Pom comes from but it's a kind of "friendly" jibe. I think it applies uniquely to English, not Scots or Welsh. Some English people in Australia embrace it, others loathe it.
To be honest the Canadian accent sounds a lot like certain American accents. But I've long since learned that Canadians hate being asked, "so which part of the States do you come from?" I worked with a Canadian woman for a number of years and because of that I've learned how to differentiate Canadian accents from the American and usually get it right most of the time. Although last year a met a young woman from Quebec - she sounded French to me! She was in Australia to improve her English.

I lived there 1970-71, just around the corner from the beach business strip. My memory was of a quiet and quaint beachside village. I visited there in 2007...wow, has it changed!!
Kia Ora,
::) Now lets see, I was born in the UK to a Jamaican Father and English mother, I moved to Oz (Sydney) in 1969 spent around 17 years all up in Oz(travelling back and forth to Europe etc), during which time I became a Aussie citizen...Then in 1986 I moved to Aotearoa (NZ) where I have a permanent resident status but still maintain an Aussie citizenship....
(even though I haven't been back there)...
So this would make me an "Afro-Saxon-Aussie-Kiwi"

I have heard about two-headed Tasmanians, but when an Aussie girl gets SRS, do the doctors also create an abdominal pouch, like the other marsupials? >:-)

Origin:

Kia Ora Jamie,
The most common belief of the origin is Prisoner Of Mother England P.O.M.E
Remember back in the day England used to ship the convicts to the colonies ( However at first the "undesirables" were shipped of to the Americas but after the war of independance, Oz was used)

Since we're talking about convict transportation, it occurred to me a while back that Pride & Prejudice was set around the time all of that was happening. You'd never know it from reading the book though, the gentry and well to do would never bother themselves with such rabble. So that means, hypothetically, that while Darcy and his dirty rich mob were poncing around their mansions my 17 year old great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother was being transported to Australia - not for being a prostitute (which she was!) but for rolling some well to do john/client for his wallet and watch. Go grandma! (She was pardoned/released after a few years, married, widowed, remarried and had about 10 kids!)

Sadly, our TV shows often do leave a lot to be desired. Even so we can surprise ourselves from time to time with a quality show. But you don't have to watch our stuff even if you live here, other than Doctor Who, my preference is for US scifi and fantasy and cop shows! I'm very unAustralian it would seem.

No offense to any Québécoises who might be hanging around here but they definitely do not sound French... :) Actually many Québec films (often excellent BTW) are shown with subtitles in France. I myself can handle any of the regional accents I have so far encountered in France, Belgium & Switzerland but during a couple of business trips to Montréal last summer, which involved meeting a few true blooded natives, I litterally couldn't understand a word.
For those who are up to it (VM for example???), here is some Québec French (BTW, don't forget your Credit Cards ;))

American Independence: 1776 With great help from vengeful French who actually got their act together for a few years before chopping all their officers heads off during the revolution (1789)
Australian Penal Transportation: 1788–1868 With a great contribution from the Irish , who were no longer getting much help from the French , thus explaining the number of lily white (Pink? ;)) skinned Australians you run into...

In spite of my French citizenship , I'm totally descended from spud-eating Micks but, having adopted a typical French diet of frogs and snails and the occasional puppy dog's tail, (*) I have progressively developed a more Mediterranean type complexion. Life is weird, non?? :) :) :)
(*) Diet not recommended for MtF's which may explain why there are far fewer French than Aussies on this forum.

I was born in Adelaide, does that count? My parents moved to Canberra when I was 5. Most people my age living in Canberra came from interstate as most of the Government departments were relocated here in the fifties and sixties.
I must admit I still regard myself as South Australian and my mother who hasn't lived in Western Australia for 72 years still regards herself as one!

Tasmania - 1 in 1/2 million
NSW - 1 in 1 million

Andrea!

But if I add South Australia you win!
South Australia - 1 in 0.4 million
Tasmania - 1 in 1/2 million (0.5 million)
NSW - 1 in 1 million
Vic - 1 in 1.4 million
WA - 1 in 2.5 million
Qld - 1 in 4.6 million

Cindy always wins. You can't pull the wool over a genius's eyes.
Unless its angora.
I always knew I was one in a million, but nice to see maths confirm it.
Nice one 1/0.4 Ahhhh

What the numbers are telling me is that we have quite a few members of our community who are not being reached.
The most recent stats I have seen put self-identified transgendered persons at 0.3% of the general population - or roughly 1 in every 333 persons.
Your calculations, above, address only MtF, so let's say, in absolute terms, 1 out of every 650 persons (w.a.g.). And we know that not all of our Aussie girls log in every day.
Just the same, let's get to work on outreach ladies.
You are our most active standard bearers!
Keep your eyes open for your sisters locally (sorry about that Jenny07).
"WA - 1 in 2.5 million"
Although I know of others in W.A thanks to facebook groups, I do not know them personally. But to possibly be the only W.A girl on this site...GAH!!!
No wonder I feel so lonely.
Not to worry Charley Bea, our Tassie sister is using her wrong head, and gets confused with the ten fingers (on each hand)
I know these two head jokes are getting a bit lame these days, but you have got that wrong. We need the two heads and according to you the extra fingers to do the work of two people to keep the "mainlanders" away - we want to keep our piece of paradise to ourselves! A paradise within a paradise - just check the shape of our beautiful island - the shape of "paradise"!
That's right, they don't call it a map of Tassie for nothing. Unfortunately if there's too much more deforestation it might resemble a brazillian instead...!
But Tassies need protection without them I lose my friends :'(
awe come on i wanna see some pictures, lol aussie girls are always the cutest, bahaha im to much crazy for my own good

Hi Ms Grace
We also have jay-Bird in Melbourne, although she hasn't been on the board for a few months now. I had a great evening with her in Melbourne and she has transitioned to Full time and looks absolutely fabulous.
PS I also had a great night out with Catherine at the Kirribilli Club in Sydney on one of my rare trips up their. Another amazing and beautiful woman (I am so glad you are safely back from your US experiences) and I also had a great day with Cindy and rides in her beautiful sports car in Adelaide....Purr!!
Is there anyone in Canberra? As that's one place I seem to get to reasonably often.

I'm with you on this one.
But dare I say it? My dearest sister in Adelaide is .6 of a million short of the barbie.
< Catherine is seen running from the room seeking immediate cover and protection under the coffee table Devlyn is seated at> Thank you Judith for your lovely comments. It's been way too long between visits. Hope you come back soon.
Yours, Eternally thankful for being a one in a million woman ( Let's not hear from any other Welshwomen - tongue in cheek Catherine)
Catherine
Judithlynn and I had a great day when she came to Adelaide.
Seriously people we should have a get together and have an Aussie girl barbie, Catherine works with male strippers in the Cross (she told me she as a g-string adjuster whatever that is) so she can bring along the entertainment.
I of course will provide the cultural focus!
I'd be happy to host a get together but my place is kinda small. No back yard. No balcony. No veranda. No barbie. No Jacaranda trees. Quite frankly its pretty un-Australian.
Geez, I need to move! :)
I do have a karaoke game on the xbox though! My one redeeming feature and I cant sing...
Pity I can't afford to travel.
Will earplugs be provided?

I'll pull out the fine crystal Jenny and we can see if we can break it :)
Woo! Adelaide racing ahead! Welcome poppy!
Sure I'll bite. Long time lurker from Melbourne here! :)
Hi Dana. ;D
Hi Megants;
The Way Out Club - what a great night out. I commute (once a year between my house in Australia - Victoria) and my house in the UK (Devon - near Padma) and when in the UK I always try to get up to the Way Out Club at least for two weekends. I generally leave the house in Exeter as Judith travelling to Paddington the train from Exeter and still in a hotel close to the Club near Tower Bridge and then spend Saturday shopping bin Selfridges, Debenhams, Harrods etc and taking tea at Fortum & Masons. Normally coming back with lots of new clothes.
Hugs
Judith

Hello Judith,
I've gone to the woc several times with Jodie from the Boudoir and stayed at the Chamberlain, great fun, although some of the goings on are a little questionable!
I enjoyed Sparkle but it was a bit too warm, says one who is sweltering now! Miss TV Scotland was really good, I'd like to go back this year but the way the Aussie $ is going, I probably won't. Sorry for being off topic, but I can't send pms yet.
Sounds like you have a nice balance, I'm guessing summer there and summer here?
Megan
I don't think anything can be off topic in this thread! ;D
Hiya, Another Aussie here from Adelaide originally but living in Canberra now.
Hello from the grand city of Brisbane

Didn't even know of this thread when I first joined up a few months ago.
Sydneysider here, born here, although have spent time living near Newcastle, living in Lismore (and attending university there), and time in Adelaide...but back in Sydney since the mid 2000's. Plus every year I spend a week up on the Gold Coast, and would move there permanently if I had the money.
Grace, you better do an update on the tally.
And as for the Five Dock RSL...never been there, but live within easy travelling distance
Five Dock RSL? Good god... I moved out of Five Dock a year ago! Not that I wanted to (lovely part of the world), but nasty break-ups tend to have a habit of forcing one's hand.... :/

Another one who lives within easy distance of the Five Dock RSL....but I too have never seen its pine and chrome loveliness, nor thrilled to its Keno machine.

In Australia? Heck no. That was back when I was dating an Australian girl, but our relationship ended really badly. Now I'd feel paranoid that she would hunt me down and murder me in my sleep if I were anywhere on the same continent. :P
Wow that bad a break up?
Quote from: Charley Bea(EmeraldP) on October 24, 2014, 10:42:06 AM
Wow that bad a break up?
Well, it wasn't exactly the breakup itself... Looking back on it now, the relationship was doomed from the beginning and I should have known better. But we just stayed together, and things got worse and worse and worse and worse. We were both so desperately lonely. I think we got far too attached to each other before we really knew each other, and the more we got to know each other, the more we found out our views on... well, pretty much everything, were at odds.
So... that's the lesson here, for anyone who is reading. Don't invest all your emotions in someone you don't know very well just because you hit it off initially.
There are
lots of lessons I learned from that relationship, actually. Lots of mistakes I will never repeat. But anyway...
Sorry to derail the thread a bit with my nonsense. Back to the Aussie girls!

The best way to dissuade people from coming to Australia would be to play them a compilation of talkback readio's biggest buffoons barking and squawking on. Monday morning or whenever. Followed by a sycophantic love-in with their favourite boofheaded minister. Knuckle dragging par excellence.

Got to be fair, There are folks like this in many other counties as well :( I'm not getting political or anything but maybe the cure for this is to round em all up and use them to do a spot of wildlife preservation. We could start a new international trade in it. I'm sure the Crocs and Sharks would welcome the free food ;D
